The first reference to the newly created office of trufelier can be found in the "Memorandum of the wages demanded by the truffle hunter for each year being in the service of SAS Mons. the Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel &." Kassel, 1 IX 1718

The document was drawn up in French, presumably since it served as a kind of contract, whereas the rest of the file was written in German.

Still, the word trufelier must have sounded quite strange in the ears of the official that he promptly misspelled the word the second time. Kassel, 1 IX 1718                                                                                                                                                                      

Almost ten years later, same location:

Another, more pragmatic official thereupon appears to have decided to use the term Trüffel Jäger [truffle hunter] – at least initially. Kassel, 25 IV 1727                                                                                                                                                  

However, on another occasion – more than one year later – described on the following page of his file he switches to Trufelier. Kassel, 9 VIII 1728

........ thus provoking – inevitably – new spelling mistakes. Kassel, 9 VIII 1728

Unconsciously, this very official probably contributed to the extinction of the word, because in the remaining pages of the file – we are meanwhilst in February 1751– trufelier no longer appears. Henceforth Trüffel Jäger and Adjutant Trüffel Jäger are used. Kassel, s.d. II 1751
